To be eligible for the U.S. Citizenship Exam, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have been a permanent resident of the U.S. for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen)
  • Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the time since you became a permanent resident
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English at a basic level
  • Have a good moral character

To apply for the U.S. Citizenship Exam, you must file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You can file Form N-400 online or by mail.

The U.S. Citizenship Exam consists of two parts:

  • Civics Test: This test consists of 20 questions about U.S. history, government, and civics. You must correctly answer at least 12 of these questions to pass.

  • English Test: This test consists of three parts:

    • Reading: You will be asked to read a short passage and answer questions about it.
