Military Service and the Path to the Victoria Cross

When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Chester Ronning, despite facing prejudice and discrimination as a Chinese-Canadian, was determined to serve his country. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and underwent rigorous training. His exceptional skills and unwavering determination quickly caught the attention of his superiors. In 1944, he joined the elite Royal Canadian Regiment and was deployed to Europe, where he would face the horrors of war firsthand.

On August 18, 1944, during the fierce fighting along the Seine River in France, Chester Ronning's extraordinary bravery would forever change the course of his life. His company came under intense enemy fire, and many of his comrades fell. Undeterred by the overwhelming odds, Ronning charged forward, single-handedly attacking a German machine gun position. Despite being wounded, he refused to retreat and continued to fight, taking out the enemy position and saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
