Victoria Gowramma was born in 1833 into the royal family of Coorg, a small but prosperous kingdom renowned for its fierce warriors and matrilineal society. From a tender age, she exhibited an unyielding spirit and a thirst for knowledge that set her apart from her contemporaries. However, her idyllic childhood was shattered when the British East India Company set its sights on annexing Coorg.
In 1834, the British launched a brutal invasion of Coorg, intent on crushing the resistance of its valiant people. Victoria's father, the reigning monarch, was captured and imprisoned, while her mother fled with her young daughter into the dense forests. For the next seven years, Victoria and her mother lived as fugitives, hunted by the relentless British soldiers.
Despite the constant danger, Victoria's spirit remained unbroken. She learned to read and write in secret, honing her intellect and nurturing her dream of a free Coorg. When she was finally reunited with her imprisoned father, she vowed to fight alongside him for the liberation of her homeland.
Victoria's courage and determination inspired her people. She became a symbol of resistance, rallying the Coorg warriors to fight against the oppressive British rule. Her fearless leadership and strategic brilliance earned her the admiration of both her followers and her enemies.
However, the British proved to be an overwhelming force. In 1837, Coorg was annexed, and Victoria's father was exiled to distant Burma. Undeterred, Victoria continued to fight for her people's freedom, even after her father's death.
In 1857, when the Indian Rebellion broke out, Victoria saw an opportunity to reignite the fight for independence. She played a pivotal role in organizing the Coorg uprising, leading her people in a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to overthrow British rule.
After the rebellion was crushed, Victoria was captured and imprisoned. She spent the rest of her life in exile, never giving up hope for Coorg's freedom. She died in 1894, a forgotten figure in history, but her legacy as a fearless warrior and a champion of her people lived on.
Victoria Gowramma: The Lost Princess of Coorg is a captivating historical novel that brings this extraordinary woman's story to life. Through vivid prose and meticulous research, author P.R. Ramachandra transports readers back to a time of great upheaval and sacrifice. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Indian history, historical fiction, or strong female characters.
