The expedition failed to reach the summit, but Hillary gained valuable experience that would help him on his successful summit attempt five years later.

In 1953, Hillary was invited to join the British Mount Everest Expedition, which was led by John Hunt. The expedition set out from Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 10, 1953.
