Elspeth Huxley was a British writer, journalist, and conservationist who lived in Africa for over 50 years. She wrote over 30 books, including The Flame Trees of Thika, which won the 1959 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. She was also a vocal advocate for the rights of Africans and for the conservation of the African environment.

Huxley was born in 1907 in Sussex, England. Her father was a British colonial administrator and her mother was a Kenyan of European descent. Huxley spent her early childhood in Kenya, where she developed a lifelong love of the African people and landscape. She was educated in England, but she returned to Kenya in 1929 to work as a journalist.

In 1931, Huxley married Gervas Huxley, a British colonial officer. The couple had three children. Huxley continued to write during this time, and she published her first novel, The Walled City, in 1933. She also wrote several non-fiction books about Kenya, including White Man's Country (1935) and Red Strangers (1939).

During World War II, Huxley worked as a war correspondent for the BBC. She covered the war in North Africa and Italy, and she was one of the first journalists to enter Rome after its liberation by the Allies. After the war, Huxley returned to Kenya, where she continued to write and work for the conservation of the African environment.

In 1959, Huxley published The Flame Trees of Thika, a memoir of her childhood in Kenya. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. The Flame Trees of Thika has been translated into over 20 languages and has sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Huxley continued to write until her death in 1997. She published over 30 books, including novels, non-fiction works, and children's books. She was also a vocal advocate for the rights of Africans and for the conservation of the African environment. She served on the board of the World Wildlife Fund and was a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Elspeth Huxley was a remarkable woman who made a significant contribution to African literature and conservation. She was a gifted writer, a tireless advocate for the rights of Africans, and a passionate defender of the African environment. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
